Group Verbs / phrasal verbs

             Verb – এর পরে কখনও preposition , কখনওবা adverb বসে এবং অর্থের পরিবর্তন ঘটায়। অর্থাৎ যে অর্থটিকে বাহ্যিক ভাবে বুঝা যায় না তাকে  group verbs / phrasal verbs বলে । নিম্নে একই অর্থ প্রকাশ করার জন্য বিভিন্ন verb এর পরে বিভিন্ন peposition / adverb দেখান হয়েছে ।

                                                                        Act

1. Act for / stand for – (পক্ষে কাজ করা )  : Rahim will act for the principal.

2.  Act on / upon / tell on (upon) / bring on / bring about – (প্রভাব ফেলে) : Hard work tells on health .

3. Act under / Act up to / Act upon / carry out / go by / abide by – (মেনে চলা) : I will act up to your  orders .

4.  Act against / go against / set against / stand against / set back - (বিপক্ষে কাজ করা) : The officer acted against  the interest of the company .

5. Act from / Act out of – (কোন উদ্দেশে কাজ করা) : I shall act from a scene of benefit .

                                                            Ask

1. Ask for / call for / cry for / pay for - (চাওয়া / দাবি করা) – I asked for a loan of Tk 5000 .

1. Bear away / bear off / carry off – (জয়লাভ করা) : I bore away my prizes .

2. Bear with / put with / bear up against – (সহ্য করা) : I can not bear such a insult .

                                                            Burst

1. Burst out laughing – (হাসিতে ফেটে পড়া )  : He burst of laughing .

2.  Burst into crying – (কান্নায় ভেঙে পড়া) :  He burst into crying / tears .

                                                            Break

1. break out ( ছড়িয়ে পড়া ) - : Cholera has broken out throughout the country .

2. break into ( জোরপূর্বক প্রবেশ করা ) : They broke into the house .

3. Break down – ( ভেঙে পড়া ) : Rina broke down to hear her father’s death .

4. Break down / go down / come down / cast down / fall off – (কমা ) :  The prize of rice has come down .

Blow

1. Blow away (remove-সরিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়া) : The wind has blown away the dry leaves.

2. Blow down (throw down-ভেঙে ফেলা) : The house was blown down by the storm.

3. Blow out (extinguish/put out-ফুঁ দিয়ে নেভানো ): She blew out the lamp and went to bed.

4. Blow up (explode-বিস্ফোরিত হওয়া) : The freedom fighter blew up the bridge by a dynamite.

5. Blow over (stop-থেমে যাওয়া) : The storm will soon blow over.

3. Buckle down to : begin to work seriously

4. Branch out into : do something beyond  one’s  normal range of activities

5.  Be fed up / be fed up with  : be completely bored

6. Bounce back: to recover from a setback or bad situation.

                                                            Call

1. Call in / send for – (  ডাক্তার ডেকে পাঠান  ) :  Call in a doctor .

2. call on – ( বাক্তির সাথে দেখা করা ) : I shall call on the MP of our locality.

3. Call at – ( বাক্তির জায়গায় দেখা করা ) :  I called on him at his office .

4. Call off / put off / hold over / stand over – ( প্রত্যাহার করা ) : They called of their hartal .

                                                            Carry

1. Carry on / go on / keep on / pass on / work on / keep off / Drive on – (  চালিয়ে যাওয়া  ) : Go on your work .

                                                            Cast

 1. Cast of / cast away / cast aside / through off – (  ছুড়ে ফেলা ) : She cast her clothes away .

                                                            Catch

1. Catch sight of / come across / catch up with / come up with / come at / fall in with / run against – ( দেখা পাওয়া ) : I caught sight of her at the play .

2. Catch up- সামনের কারো কাছে পৌছতে সফল হওয়া- succeed in reaching a person who is ahead of one.

                                                            Come

1. Come of –  (  জন্মগ্রহণ করা ) : I came of a rich family .

2. Come from – (  দেশের বাড়ি ) : I come from India .

3. Come over – ( মাধ্যমে আসা ) : The news came over the radio .

4. Come off – ( সম্পন্ন হওয়া ) : Our marriage ceremony came off this Monday .

5. Come on / set in  – (  শুরু হওয়া ) : The rain has came on .

6. Come by – (  পাওয়া ) : I came by the watch in  the garden .

7.  Come out / get out / fall out – ( প্রকাশিত হওয়া ) : The SSC result has came out .

8.  Come on / hurry up – (  তাড়াতাড়ি করা ) : Come on ! Everyone is waiting for you.

9. Come round-(আরোগ্য লাভ করা-recover) The patient will come round soon.

3. Cross out ( a mistake / a word ) : pen through, if you make a mistake / Cross it out

8. Come in for ( be given blame )  (দোষের শিকার হওয়া   )

9. Come out with (produce - উপস্থাপন করা )

10. Clime in  with : be consistent with

12. Creak down on : take severe  steps against

13. Cry out for ( demand urgently )

14. Clean up- To remedy a bad situation. To make a problem go away.

2. Do off / put off / take off / draff / pull off – (  খুলে ফেলা ) : Do off your shoes .

                                                            Draw

1. Draw away / drive away / turn out / draw at – (অন্যদিকে নিয়ে যাওয়া ) : The army are now drawing away .

22. Go back on : ( claim , ship , fail to keep ) – I cannot make a promise , and then  go back on

23.  Go in for (enter , complete ) : He has decided to go in the ten mile road run in the year

24.  Go through  with ( finish / bring to an conclusion )  : He went through his plan although his friends advised to continue

25. Get away with / run away with take and carry off secretly   (perform some illegal act without punishment , run away ) –The thief got away with Tk 5000

26. Grow out of  (become too big / abandon / give up ) : He grew out of bad habit

27. Get along with : keep good relation with / DO something wrong without being caught

28. Get back to : speak / write (again ) later

29. Get behind with : fall to pay on time

30.  Get off with : start a sexual relation with

31. Give into-: কেউ যা পছন্দ করে না তাতে সম্মত হওয়া-Agree to something you don't like

32. Give in : বশ্যতা স্বীকার করা- Yield- The enemies gave in at last.

                                                                        Hand

1.  Hand on / pass on – ( হস্তান্তর করা/ হাতে করে পৌছে দেওয়া ) : Hand on the book to your father .

                                                            Look

1. Look for / search for – ( খোঁজ করা ) : I am looking for a job .

2.  Look into / look over / look through  – (  তদন্ত করা ): The police are looking into the     matter .

3. Look down upon –( hate / despise -ঘৃণা করা  ): Do not look down upon the poor .

4. Look out / watch out – ( সাবধান ) : Look out ! There’s a bus coming.

5. Look in / call in – (  সংক্ষিপ্ত ভ্রমন ) : I will look in how you are .

6. Look up – ( a word in the dictionary -  অভিধানে শব্দ খোজা ) : Look up the word in the dictionary .

7. Look after-take care of -দেখা শুনা করা- Mother looked after her child.

2. Hurry up : do something more quickly

3. Hold out on : refuse to give support

4. Hold out for : demand and wait for

5. Hang on to : retain , keep in one’s permission

6. Knock down ( The building) : demolish

7. Keep up with : Go as fast as

8. Look forward to ( expect with pleasure )

9. Look in on ( make a short visit  )

10. Live up to ( maintain a certain standard , moral , economic respect )
