The Conjunction

যে সব Word দুটি word, clause, group of words বা sentence কে  join  করে।

Classification: Conjunctions are of three types:

1. Co-ordinating conjunction

2.   Subordinating conjunction

3.   Correlative Conjunction

1.    Co-ordinating conjunction: যে সব  Conjunction দুই বা ততোধিক clause কে সংযুক্ত করে।

যেমনঃ-- therefore, then, thus, however, only, while, whereas, nevertheless.

Example: I went to college and took the class. / He as well as his friends is lazy. / Walk fast or you will miss the bus.

Use of Some Co-ordinating Conjunction:

-But (কিন্তু):-- ইহা দুইটি বিরোধমূলক বাক্যের মাঝখানে বসবে। যেমনঃ---He was intelligent but he was not selected. / He has much money but leads a simple life.

-And(এবং):-ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে এবং দুই বাক্য দ্বারা সমান কিছু বুঝায়।যেমনঃ- He can read and write well. / Rahim took the pen and wrote a letter.

- As well as  : দুটি সমজাতীয়  Structure কে যুক্ত করতে  as well as ব্যবহৃত।    as will as এর পূর্বে যে  parts   of speech ব্যবহৃত হবে  As will as এর পরেও সেই  parts  of speech ব্যবহৃত হবে।যেমনঃ Mr. Rashed is a noted chemist as well as an effective teacher .

-Or/Otherwise (অন্যথায়/নাইতে) :-ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে এবং Or/Otherwise এর Subject বসবে এবং তারপর Verb বসবে। যেমনঃ- Do the work at once or you will be punished. / Read attentively or you will find.

-Yet (তা সত্বেও /তথাপিও):-  ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে  তবে সেটি সত্বেও নির্দেশ করে। যেমনঃ He is poor. Yet he is happy.

-While (অথচ /অন্যদিকে) :- ইহা দুইটি বিপরিতধর্মী বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে  । যেমনঃ- He passed the examination while his sister could not. / I like it while he does not like.

-Whereas  (অথচ /অন্যদিকে) :-  ইহা দুইটি বিপরিতধর্মী বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে বৈপরিত্ব কিছু নির্দেশ করে । যেমনঃ-He is rich whereas his brother is poor. / He plays cricket whereas I play football.

-Therefore : যুক্তি নির্ভর ফলাফল বর্ণনা করতে therefore ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ- 2a  is equal to 10  and therefore a is equal to 5

The Conjunction

Subordinating conjunction: যে সব Conjunction subordinate clause কে  main-clause-এর সাথে সংযুক্ত করে এবং একে অপরের উপর নির্ভরশীল থাকে।

Example:

1. I had reached the college before the examination began.
2. Don’t go out if it rains, I did not go because I did not know.
3. It is one month since I received the letter.

Use of Some Subordinating Conjunction:

-That (যে বা যাহা):- এটির অর্থ যে বা যাহা এটি দুটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসবে এবং যে বা যাহা অর্থ প্রদান করবে।     

He says that he is honest. / Father told me that he won’t come. /I know that the earth is round.

-For (কারনে বা কারণ):- For এর বাংলা অর্থ কারনে বা কারণ যখন এটি দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসবে তখন এর অর্থ হবে কারন আর যখন এটি কোন Phrase  এর আগে বসবে তখন এটির অর্থ হবে কারনে তবে দুটি বাক্যের মধ্যে যে বাক্যটি দ্বারা কারন বুঝাচ্ছে সেটির আগে বসবে। He could not come for he was ill. /He does not know it for he is not present.

-Because  (কারণ):- ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের শুরুতে বসতে পারে আবার দুইটি বাক্যের মাঝখানেও বসতে পারে। তবে সর্বদাই স্মরণ রাখবে দুই বাক্যের মধ্যে যে বাক্য দ্বারা কারণ বুঝাবে তার আগে বসবে। যেমনঃ- He was absent because his father was ill. /Because it is raining, I won’t go.

-Since/As / (যেহেতু...........সেহেতু বা কারণ):- ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের শুরুতে বসতে পারে আবার দুইটি বাক্যের মাঝখানেও বসতে পারে। তবে সর্বদাই স্মরণ রাখবে দুই বাক্যের মধ্যে যে বাক্য দ্বারা কারণ বুঝাবে তার আগে বসবে। যেমনঃ- Since he was tired, he won’t go. /I came to see him as he has nobody to see.

-Though/ Although (যদিও........তবুও):- ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের শুরুতে বসতে পারে আবার দুইটি বাক্যের মাঝখানেও বসতে পারে। তবে দুই বাক্যের মধ্যে যে বাক্য দ্বারা সত্বেও বুঝাবে তার আগে বসবে । বাক্যে যে কোনটি আগে বা পরে লেখা যায়।যেমনঃ- Though he had a lot, he wanted more. /He was punished though he was innocent.

-Before (আগে):- ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মাঝখানে বসবে। তবে Before এর আগের বাক্যটা Past Perfect Tense (Subject+had+Past participle of Verb+ Object/Extension) হলে পরের বাক্যটা Past Indefinite Tense (Subject+Past form of the verb+Object/Extension) হবে আর Before এর আগের বাক্যটি Future Perfect Tense হলে এবং Before এর পরের বাক্যটি Future Indefinite Tense বা Present Indefinite Tense হবে যেমনঃ- He had lost the pen before  he came here. /I will have done it before you came.

-After (পরে):- ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মাঝখানে বসবে। তবে  After এর আগের বাক্যটা Indefinite Tense (Subject+Past form of the verb+Object/Extension) হলে পরের বাক্যটা Past Perfect Tense (Subject+had+Past participle of Verb+ Object/Extension) হবে আর  After এর আগের বাক্যটি

 Future Indefinite Tense ev Present Indefinite Tense হলে  After এর পরের বাক্যটি  Future Perfect Tense হবে। যেমনঃ-He came after I had come. /Father meets him after I will have reached.

-Lest (যাতে...........না) :-ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে এবং Lest এর Subject বসবে এবং তারপর should বসবে। যেমনঃ-He punished me lest I should tell a lie. /Walk fast lest you should miss the class.

-If (যদি) :- কোন এক বিশেষ অবস্থায় বা শর্ত প্রকাশ করে। ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে আবার শুরুতেও বসতে পারে । যেমনঃ- Water boils if you heat it to 100 Centigrade.

-Unless(যদি...........না) :-ইহা If এর Negative রূপ। ইহা If এর মত দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসতে পারে আবার শুরুতেও বসতে পারে তবে যখন এগুলি বাক্যে বসবে তখন If এর মত কাঠামোগত নিয়ম ঠিক থাকবে।

Unless you work hard, you will fail. /He will shine in life unless he works hard.

-Till (পর্যন্ত) :- ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে  বসে এবং পর্যন্ত অর্থ প্রদান করে। যেমনঃ- He will wait for me till you come. /We shall nurse him till you come round.

-Until (পর্যন্ত...........না) :--ইহা Till এর Negative রূপ। ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে এবং পর্যন্ত......না  অর্থ প্রদান করে। যেমনঃ-He will wait for me until you come. /We shall nurse him until you come round.

-Since (হল):- ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে এবং একটি কাজের পর আরেকটি কাজ অনেক দিন হল এমন কিছু নির্দেশ করে। যেমনঃ- It is two years since he died. /Two months have passed since he left school.

-As if/ as though(যেন) :-  ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে একটি তুলনামূলক কাজের বর্ণণা দেয়া বূঝায় । যেমনঃ

He talks as if he were a mad. /He requested me as if he had done it.

-So.........that  (এতই...........যে) :--ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে তবে এর পর বসে এবং তারপর বসে এবং এর পর দ্বিতীয় বাক্যটি বসবে।যেমনঃ- Many farmers of our country are so poor that they can not keep body and soul together. /He was so honest that he didn’t take bribe.

-So that/that/ in order that (যাতে/ যাহাতে) :--ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের মধ্যখানে বসে এখানে প্রথম বাক্য দ্বারা কারণ এবং দ্বিতীয় বাক্য ফল বুঝায়। We eat so that we may live well. /He reads attentively so that he can make a good result.

The Conjunction

            Correlative Conjunction: যে সব Conjunction জোড়ায় জোড়ায় বসে দুটি Word, Clause বা

Sentence  কে পরস্পর সম্পর্ক যুক্ত করে।  Example: Both Salim and his brother are absent today. / The day was either wit or dry. /The field is so small that I cannot play.

Use of Some Correlative Conjunction:

-Whether ----or (কি...........না) :- ইহা দুইটি বিকল্প চিন্তা বা কাজের ক্ষেত্রে বসে।যেমনঃ-  I don’t know you whether he will come or not. / I asked him whether he knows it or not.

-No sooner had..................than/ Hardly had...........when / Scarcely had.......when/before (না.....তেই........) :- একটি কাজ শেষ হতে না হতেই আরেকটি কাজ আরম্ভ হয়ে গেল এ রকম অর্থ প্রদান করতে বাক্যের শুরুতে

No sooner had বসে এবং যদি শুরুতে No sooner had বসে তাহলে বাক্যের মধ্যখানে  than বসে এবং তারপর দ্বিতীয় বাক্যটি বসবে ঠিক একইভাবে যদি বাক্যের শুরুতে Scarcely had আসে তাহলে বাক্যের মধ্যখানে

when বসে এবং তারপর দ্বিতীয় বাক্যটি বসবে ঠিক একইভাবে যদি বাক্যের শুরুতে Hardly had আসে তাহলে বাক্যের মধ্যখানে before বসে এবং তারপর দ্বিতীয় বাক্যটি বসবে

No sooner had he seen me than he ran away. /Scarcely had we reached the station when the train left. /Hardly had he started reading before the electricity was off.

-Not only.......but also (শুধু ...নয়..বরং..বটে):-  ইহা দুইটি বাক্যের শুরুতে বা শেষে বা মধ্যখানে বসতে পারে।

Not only he but also his brother saw it. / He not only ate rice but also took rest. / I have taken not only a pen but also a book.

-Both........... and (উভয়েই):-  ইহা Not only.......but also এর মত দুইটি বাক্যের শুরুতে বা শেষে বা মধ্যখানে বসতে পারে। Both Rana and Raju came here. / I know both you and your brother.

-Either...or (হয়....এটা না...হয়...ওটা):-  ইহা বাক্যের অবস্থানুযায়ী বসবে। Either you or he came. / He will either do it or go there.

-Neither.....nor (এটাও...না...ওটাও..না):-  ইহা বাক্যের অবস্থানুযায়ী বসবে। Neither the boy nor his brother came. / He knows neither him nor his father.
