Rule 1.Degrees of comparison ----- comparative adjective;

• Entity-র মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাতে Adjective এর comparative   degree ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং এরপর than ব্যবহৃত হয়। 
•  

Exercise :

Incorrect :This roomis morespaciousas theother one .

Correct :Thisroom is morespaciousthanthe other one

Rule  2.  Degree  of  comparison ---- irregular  adjective

Irregular  comparative  form যুক্ত adjective গুলোর নিম্নে বর্ণিত নিয়ম অনুয়ায়ী  comparison হয়।

Subject + verb +   irregular  comparative  +  than +   noun /  pronoun

 Example : This ice  cream is better  than  the other  brands 

 নিম্নে কয়েকটি irregular  adjective উল্লেখ করা হল:

Exercises : 

Incorrect :  The  lab  is more  far  from the  bus  stop  than  the library

Correct :  The lab is farther  from  the  bus  stop  than  the library

Rule 3.   Degree  of comparison  ----- comparative  adverbs :

দুটি কাজের মাত্রা বা গতির মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাতে Adverb এরও comparative  degree ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং এরপর than ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন--

 Subject + verb +  { adverb + er ( one  - syllable  )  more  / less + adverb  ( more  - than  - one  syllable }  +  than + {  noun pronoun } 

Exercises:

Incorrect: This train always leaves late than the time on the schedule.

Correct: This train always leaves later than the time on the schedule.

Incorrect: He drives more fast than she does.

Correct: He drives faster than she does.  

Rule 4.Doublecomparatives

• কোন Sentence এর প্রথম clause টি  comparative  form এ হয়, তাহলে দ্বিতীয়  clause টিও  comparative   form-এ হয় এবং দুটি  comparative এর পূর্বেই the বসে। এক্ষেত্রে, প্রথম clause টি কারণ এবং দ্বিতীয় clause ফলাফল বুঝায়। 

The + comparative+ subject + verb (,) + the +comparative+subject + verb

Example :

Incorrect :Thefaster wefinishthe soonwecan leave

Correct :Thefaster wefinishthe soonerwecan leave

Rule 5.  Than ছাড়াএ তুলনা বুঝাতে adjective এর comparative  degree ব্যবহৃত হয়, তবে সেক্ষেত্রে  sentence এ প্রথমে বা শেষে  of the  two / pair / twins উল্লেখ থাকবে, এবং এক্ষেত্রে comparative-এর পূর্বে  the ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Subject + verb +the +comparative + of the two / pair /twins +noun( plural )

Of thetwo / pair /twins+noun ( plural )subject +verb+the +comparative

Example :

Of thetwo shirtsthisone is theprettier

Of thetwo booksthisone is the more interesting

Rule 6.  Noun এর পূর্বে determiner বসিয়ে noun কেও তুলনা করা যেতে পারে। 

 Subject + verb + as + {  many much  little few } + noun  + as +  { noun pronoun}

Or       

Subject + verb+ as + { more fewer less }  + noun +   than + { noun pronoun }

Example :

He earns  as much  money  as his brother

 They   have  as few  classes  as  we. [এখানে,  as-এর পর we হয়েছে, কারণ এখানে subject  they এর সাথে তুলনা করা হচ্ছে।] 

Before   payday  I have  as little  money  as my  brother

Or

I have  more  books   than  she

February has  fewer  days  than march

  Their  job  allows   then  less  freedom   then  ours  does .

Rule  7. অনেক সময় অর্থকে জোর প্রদানের জন্য  Comparative  degree এর পূর্বে  far / much ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। 

 Subject + verb +  { far much } { adjective adverb } + er +  than + { noun pronoun }

His car + is +  far +  better +  than +  yours

Or

Subject + verb +  { far much }+ { more less } +  { adjective adverb } +  than + { noun pronoun }

His watch  +  is + far +  more +  expensive +   than +  mine

Example :

 A watermelon  is much sweeter  than  a lemon .

 She  dance  much  more  artistically  than her  predecessors

He  speaks  English  much more rapidly  than  he dose  Spanish

Rule 8. দুইয়ের অধিক  Entity-র মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাতে   adjective-এর  superlative   degree ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং  superlative এর পূর্বে সব সময়  the ব্যবহৃত হয়। 

 Subject + verb + the +   {  adjective  + est  most / least +  adjective }  + in+ singular count  noun of +  plural count  noun}

Exercises :

Incorrect :  she is more  prettier  than all  of the  girls in  our  class

Correct :  she is   prettier   of  all the  girls in  our  class.

Rule 9. Irregular  adjective-গুলোকে  superlative  degree হিসেবে ব্যবহার করতে হলে নিম্নে বর্ণিত নিয়ম প্রযোজ্য হবে। 

 Subject + verb +  the + irregular superlative  +   {  in + singular  count noun of  +  plural  count  noun }

Exercise :

 Incorrect :  the  badest  accident  in the  history  of  the  city  occurred  last night on the  north – freeway

Correct :  the  worst  accident  in the  history   of the  city  occurred  last  night  on the  north  freeway

Rule 10.  Sentence এ যদি  of the  three / four থাকে, তাহলে  superlative  degree  ব্যবহৃত হবে। অর্থাৎ-

Subject +  verb +  The + superlative  + of the  three  / four  + noun  ( plural )

Or

 Of the three / four + noun ( plural ) +    Subject +  verb +  The + superlative 

Example : 

 Of the three  shirts  this  one  is the  prettiest

Comparison of adjective & adverb

Rule 11.  Sentence-এ  one  of  the থাকলে adjective-এর  superlative  degree ব্যবহৃত হবে।

Example : 

 One  of  the  greatest  tennis  players  in the  world  is biron  borg

Kuwait  is one  of the  biggest  oil  producers  in the  world

Rule 12.  Exact  similarity  --- the same  as  and  the same

The  same  as এবং the  same এর অর্থ একই।  the same  as দুটি  noun এর মাঝে   compare করার জন্য বস এবং  the  same   , and দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি  noun অথবা  plural noun এর পরে বসে। অর্থাৎ-

Noun + verb+  the  same  as  +  noun 

This  house + is +  the same  as +  that  house

These  house  + are + the same  as +   those  houses 

Or

Or

Noun ( plural ) +verb( plural )+ the same

Rule 13. Generalsimilarity---- similartoandsimilar

Similar to এবং similar-এর অর্থ একই।  Similar to দুটি  noun এর মাঝে  compare করার জন্য বসে এবং similar and দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি  noun অথবা  plural  noun-এর পরে বসে। অর্থাৎ- 

Noun + verb +similarto + noun

This house + is+similar to +thathouse

Or

Or

Example :

This bookis similartothatone

Rule 14.Generalsimilarity----- likeandalike :

Like এবং  alike  এর অর্থ একই।  like দুটি  noun এর মাঝে compare করার জন্য বসে এবং alike  and দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি noun অথবা  plural noun-এর পরে বসে। অর্থাৎ- 

Noun + verb +like + noun

This house + is+like+thathouse

Or

Or

Rule 15.  General  difference  ----- different from and different

 Different  from এবং different এর অর্থ একই।  different from দুটি noun এর মাঝে compare করার জন্য বসে এবং different  and দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি noun অথবা plural noun এর পরে বসে। অর্থাৎ-

Noun + verb( singular )+different from + noun

This house + is+ different from +thathouse

Or

Or

Rule 16.  General  difference ---- to  differ form :

 Subject-এর পরে যদি  auxiliary   verb থাকে, তাহলে  different form ব্যবহৃত হবে, কিন্তু subject-এর পরে যদি    auxiliary  verb না থাকে, তাহলে শুধু  differ /  differs from ব্যবহৃত হবে।  differ মুলত verb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। 

Subject 3rd  person  singular হলে  differs ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Noun   + differ / differs + form + noun  / pronoun

This one +  differs + from +  the  rest

Or

Noun  +  verb +  different from  + noun

This house + is  + different  from  +   that   house

 Incorrect :  Sharon is  different  of other  women   I know

Correct :  Sharon is  different  from  other  women   I know

Rule 17.  Specific   similarity  ---- quality  noun s

তুলনা বুঝাতে Quality  noun গুলোর পূর্বে  the same এবং পরে  as ব্যবহৃত হয়।

 Quality   noun গুলো নিম্নরুপ:

Structure :

 Subject+  verb +   the same +  noun ( quality)  + as  +  noun /  pronoun

He + is +  the same + age +  as +  marry

Exercises :

 Incorrect :  I want  to buy  a pair  of shoes  the same  style like  these  

I ,m wearing

Correct : :  I want  to buy  a pair  of shoes  the same  style as these  

I, m wearing

Incorrect :  this  is not   the same  big   as the   rest  of the  apartments

Correct :  this  is not   the same  size as  big   as the   rest  of the  apartments

Incorrect:  please  cut  my  hair  the same  length  like  the style  in this  magazine

Correct :  please  cut  my  hair  the same  length as the  style  in this  magazine

Rule 18.  Specific  similarity  ---- quality  adjectives :

তুলনা বুঝাতে এই  adjective গুলোর পূর্বে এবং পরে as ব্যবহৃত হয়।   

 quality  adjectives গুলো নিম্নরুপ:

 Structure :

 Subject + verb +  as +  adjective ( quality)  + as +  noun/ pronoun

He +  is +  as  + old +  as +  marry

Exercises :

Incorrect :  marys  job  is as  hard  than  bill’s

  Correct :  marys  job is as  hard  as bills

 Incorrect :  miss  jones English  is not  as clear  than  dr.  bakers

Correct : miss  jones English  is not  as clear   as dr.  bakers

Incorrect : He is  not as  tall  like  his brother

Correct :  He is  not as  tall   as his brother

Rule 19.  Comparative   estimates  ---- multiple  number s

 কোন Sentence-এ যদি   multiple  number থাকে, তাহলে এর পর  as many as অথবা as much  as ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Uncountable  noun এর জন্য  as much as ব্যবহৃত হয়।

  Multiple  number গুলো নিম্নরুপ:

  Structure :

Subject + verb+  multiple  number+ as +   { many  much } +  ( noun)&nbnbsp; + as + { noun pronoun}

We +  have +  half + as + many + as +  we  need

Note :  multiple  number এর পরে কখনো so ------as অথবা   more  than / less  than ব্যবহৃত হয় না। এখানে, many  much এর পর noun থাকতেও পারে আবার নাও থাকতে পারে।

Exercises : 

Incorrect :  this  one is prettier  , but  it  costs  twice  more  than   the other one

Correct : this  one is prettier  , but  it  costs  twice  much as    the other one

Rule  20.   Comparative   estimates  -----as  many  as

তুলনা বুঝাতে নির্দিষ্ট সংখ্যার পূর্বে As many as ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Subject  +   verb  + as  many as  + ( specific ) number +  { noun pronoun }

We  +  expect + as many as +  thirty  people   to come .

Exercises :

Incorrect ;   There   are as many  fifteen  thousand  students  attending  summer  school

Correct :  There   are as many  fifteen  thousand  students  attending  summer  school

NOTE : নির্দিষ্ট সংখ্যার পূর্বে as much  as ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে যদি  noun টির দ্বারা weight  , distance , money এর পরিমাণ বুঝায়।

Example : 

As much  as ten  pounds . ওজন

As much  as ten  miles. দুরত্ব

 As much  as twenty  dollars. টাকা অর্থে

Rule 21.  Illogical  comparative  degrees

 Comparison সাধারনত একই entity এর মধ্যে হয়ে থাকে, কিন্তু কখনো আলাদা দুটি জিনিসের মধ্যে  compare করা হলে illogical  comparison হয়ে থাকে। এক্ষেত্রে  that  of / those  of ব্যবহার করে illogical comparison কে logical   comparison এ পরিণত করা যায়।

মনে রাখবে,  Singular  noun এর জন্য that of এবং  plural  noun এর জন্য  those   of ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

  Noun  ( singular  ) +  verb +    adjective  + than + that  of ( in)  + { noun / pronoun}

The  salary    of a  professor + is +  higher +   than + that  of + a secretary .

Noun  ( plural )  + verb  +  adjective  +    than +  those  of  ( in )   + {  noun pronoun } 

The duties  of a  policeman + are +  more  dangerous +  than  +  those  +of   + a  teacher

Note : এখানে যদি “the salary   of a  professor  is higher    than  a secretary” বলা হত তাহলে এটি বুঝাবে যে, একজন    professor এর বেতন (যার কোন প্রাণ নেই) এর সাথে তুলনা করা হচ্ছে একজন  secretary র (যার প্রাণ আছে)। কিন্তু যেহেতু এরা সমজাতীয় নয়, তাই এদের মধ্যে তুলনাও সম্ভব নয়। এক্ষেত্রে তাই    that of (অথবা অন্যান্য ক্ষেত্রে those  of বসবে।

Exercise : 

Incorrect :  her  qualifications  are better  than  any  other  candidate

Correct :  her  qualifications  are better  than those of   any  other  candidate

Note :   possessive ব্যবহার করে illogical   comparison-কে  logical  comparison এ রুপ দেওয়া যায়।

Example

Incorrect :Hisdrawingsareas perfectas hisinstructor

Correct : Hisdrawingsareas perfectas hisinstructor,s ( possessive)

Note : এখানে instructors এর মানে হচ্ছে  instructors   drawings

Rule 22.  Illogical  comparative  --- general  similarity  and  difference

 Comparison সাধারণত একই   entity এর মধ্যে হয়ে থাকে, কিন্তু কখনো আলাদা দুটি জিনিসের মধ্যে  compare করা হলে illogical  comparison হয়। এক্ষেত্রে  that  of /  those of ব্যবহার করে illogical  comparison কে logical  comparison এ পরিণত করা যায়।

Noun  ( singular )  + verb  + different  from +  that  of ( in )  + { noun pronoun}

The  climate in the  north  + is + different  from + that  of + in the  south

Or 

Noun   ( plural )  + verb +  different from  + those  of  ( in )  +  { noun  pronoun }  

 The rules  + are  + different + from + those  of + soccer

Exercises :

 Incorrect :  The food in  my  country  is very  different  than   that  in  the  united  states

Correct :  The food in  my  country  is very  different  from    that  in  the  united  states

Rule 23. তুলনার সময় দুইটি  Noun এর প্রথমটির possessive  case হলে দ্বিতীয়টিরও  possessive case হয়।

Example :  

Incorrect:   karim's house  is better  than  rahim

Correct :  karim's house  is better  than  Rahim,s

Rule 24. একটি Sentence-এ একই  noun কে modify করার জন্য একধিক  adjective ব্যবহৃত হলে, তাদের প্রত্যেকেরই পৃথকভাবে  Degree অনুযয়ী formation হয়।

Example :

Incorrect :  you are  the wisest  and  beautiful  of  the  three  girls

Correct :  you are  the wisest  and  most  beautiful  of  the  three  girls

Incorrect :   mini is  intelligent  and  taller  than   goni

Correct :  mini is  more  intelligent  and  taller  than   goni

Rule 25.  তুলনা যদি দুইটি Noun এর মধ্যে না বুঝিয়ে দুইটি  adjective এর মধ্যে বুঝায়, তাহলে প্রথমটির আগে  more ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং উভয় adjective এর positive  degree হয়।

Example : 

Incorrect :   This  rice is   cheaper   than  good

Correct :  This  rice is   more  cheaper   than  good

Rule 26. নিম্নলিখিত Word গুলো  superlative এর অর্থ প্রদান করে বলে এদের পূর্বে কখনও most ব্যবহৃত হয় না। 

Supreme  , complete ,  unique , universal , perfect , false , etc

Example ;

 Incorrect :   He   has the most  supreme power

Correct :  He   has the   supreme power

Incorrect :  it is  the most  unique  opportunity 

 Correct :  It  is a unique  opportunity 

Rule  27.  Else দ্বারা comparative  degree না বুঝালেও,  else এর পর than ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example : 

  Incorrect :  I can  do  nothing  else  but  go there

Correct :  :  I can  do  nothing  else  than  go there

 Incorrect :  nobody  else  but   Rahim  can do  it

Correct :  nobody  else    than    Rahim  can do  it

Rule 28. একই বাক্যে একই Adjective এর জন্যে একাধিক comparative বা superlative  degree ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে না।

 Example : 

Incorrect :  This  tree  is  the  most  tallest  of  all  in this jungle

Correct :   This  tree  is  the  tallest  of  all  in this jungle

Incorrect :  I am  comparatively  better today

Correct : I am   better  today  or I am comparatively   well  today

Rule 29. নিম্নলিখিত Adjective সব সময় comparative- এ ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং এদের পর  than না বসে to বসে।

Superior  ,  inferior , senior , junior  ,  prior , posterior

 Example :

 We must   give  thought  to this  prior  to that 

You  are  junior  to me  in age

 She is  senior  to you  by  three  years

 He is   superior  to  me  in rank

Rule 30. নিম্নলিখিত Adjective গুলো সব সময় positive  adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়, কখনও এদের পর   than অথবা to কোনটিই ব্যবহৃত হয় না।

 Exterior ,  interior  , ulterior , major , minor

Example : 

 The  exterior  portion  of the  house  is worse  than  the  interior  portion

 He did  it  with  some  ulterior  motive

 The major  portion  of  the  people  are illiterate

 Do  not  quarrel  over  such  a minor matter

Comparison of adjective & adverb

Rule 31. নিম্নলিখিত Adjective গুলো সব সময়   positive  adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়, কখনও এদের পর  than অথবা to কোনটিই ব্যবহৃত হয় না।

 Inner  , outer ,  latter , elder ,  hinder , upper , former , utter

Example : 

They  ran  to  the  outer wall

 Rule 32.  Later & latter

Later অর্থ-পরে। এটি  time নির্দেশ  করে এবং এটি comparative   adjective হিসেবে ববহৃত হয়, অর্থাৎ এর পর than ব্যবহৃত হয়।

  Example: 

 Incorrect :  she  came  to  school  latter  than  I

Correct :  she  came  to school  later  than I

কিন্তু Latter অর্থ-পরবর্তী। এটি  position নির্দেশ করে এবং এটি comparative adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় না, অর্থাৎ এর পর   than ব্যবহৃত হয় না।

 Example :  open the  latter  chapter

 Correct :  open  the  latter  chapter

Rule 33.

 Farther  &  further

Farther  অর্থ-অধিকতর দূরবর্তী। এটি distance নির্দেশ করে এবং এটি comparative  adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। 

 Example : 

Incorrect :  Tangail  is  further from  Dhaka  than  gazipur

Correct : Tangail  is  further from  Dhaka  than  gazipur

কিন্তু  Further অর্ত-পুনরায় বা অতিরিক্ত। এটি  comparative adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় না, অর্থাৎ এর পর than ব্যবহৃত হয় না, এর পর   noun ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example : 

Incorrect :  no father  discussion  will  be held  on this  point

Correct :  no father  discussion  will  be held  on this  point

Rule 34. Older  &  elder 

Older অর্থ-অধিকতর বয়স্ক/পুরাতন। এটি  comparative adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।[মনে রাখতে হবে,  older দিয়ে কোন পারিবারিক বা আত্মীয়গত সম্পর্কের প্রতি নির্দেশ করা হয় না।]

Example :

 Incorrect :  she is  elder  than  his brother

Correct : she is  elder  than  his brother

কিন্তু Elder অর্থ-অধিকতর বড়। এটি  comparative adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় না, অর্থাৎ এর পর  than ব্যবহৃত হয় না, এর পর noun ব্যবহৃত হয়। 

  [মনে রাখতে হবে, Elder দিয়ে পারিবারিক বা আত্মীয়গত সম্পর্কের প্রতি নির্দেশ করা হয়]

Example : 

Incorrect : My  older  brother  is   a university  student

Correct :   My  elder   brother  is   a university  student

 Rule 35.  Less  &  fewer

Less অর্থ-অধিকতর কম; এর দ্বারা পরিমাণ বুঝায় এবং এটি  comparative adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তবে   uncountable   noun এর আগে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example : 

Incorrect :  this  mug  contains  fewer  water  than  that

Correct this  mug  contains   less  water  than  that

কিন্তু Fewer অর্থ-অধিকতর কম। এটি comparative adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তবে এটি  countable  noun এর ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং এর দ্বারা সংখ্যা বুঝায়।

Example :

Incorrect :  No less  than  twenty  boys were  present  there

Correct :  No fewer  than  twenty  boys were  present  there
