Kinds of Phrases

Phrase এমন একটি শব্দ সমষ্টি, যার কোন   finite verb এবং subject থাকে না, কেবলমাত্র বাক্যের একটি উপাদান হিসেবে কাজ করে। Example: To take exercise is good for health. / The boy standing there is my younger brother.

Phrase কে 8 ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়। (অবশ্য অনেকে Phrase কে আরো কিছু ভাগে ভাগ করেছেন।) যথা:

1. Noun phrase

যে Phrase টি  subject, object এবং complement হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাকে   noun phrase বলে। যথা:   Reading novels is a good habit.

2. Adjective phrase

যে Phrase টি  noun /  pronoun কে modify করে, তাকে adjective phrase বলে। এ অবস্থায় adjective phrase টি Noun এর পরেই বসে। যথা:

 A woman with a veil over her body approached the doctor.

3. Adverb phrase

যে Phrase টি verb কে modify করে, তাকে  adverb  phrase বলে। যথা: The school is  situated in  front of  my  house. He beat the dog   black and blue.

4. Prepositional phrase

যে Phrase-  Preposition এর কাজ করে ( যে phrase-  sentence এর  noun বা  pronoun এর সাথে অন্যান্য word বা  phrase এর সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করায়) তাকে  Preposition   phrase  বলে। যথা: The boy shouted at the top of his voice.

বি:দ্র: Preposition   phrase এর উভয় পাশে বেশির ভাগ ক্ষেত্রে  Preposition থাকে।

5. Conjunctional phrase

যে Phrase বাক্যে  conjunction এর কাজ করে বা কোন phrase / clause কে যুক্ত করে তাকে   Conjunctional phrase  বলে। যথা: Not only he but also his brother wrote  a book.

6. Interjectional phrase

যে Phrase দ্বারা বাক্যে আবেগ, অনুভূতি ও বিষ্ময় প্রকাশ পায় তাকে  Interjectional phrase বলে। যথা: Oh dear me! What shall I do?

7. Phrasal verb

Verb এর সাথে preposition বা adverb মিলিত হয়ে verb এর কাজ করলে তাকে Phrasal verb বলে। যথা: He looks after her parents

8. Verb phrase

একাধিক verb একসাথে থাকলে তাকে Verb phrase বলে। যথাঃ The boy can climb a tree.
