Marriage creates new social relationships between the spouses and their families. Wedding ceremonies are performed to bring a man and woman together in a marriage. This ceremony differs due to race, religion, culture, society, beliefs and customs etc. However the one common thing in every ceremony is the boundless joy it gives to every member of the family.
My cousin’s marriage came off in the last week of November. Preparations for the marriage were in full swing. She was the first child to get married in the family. Her marriage was celebrated with great enthusiasm.Â
Since it was winter, the ceremony took place in an open field. A stage was prepared for the celebration. It was decorated with flowers and artificial lighting. A huge ‘Shamiana’(tent) was erected in the whole place with flowers hanging from it . There were lights everywhere. The whole set up looked like a scene from a fairytale.
First, the guests were served sweets and cold drinks. All the guests had brought different gifts for the bride and the bridegroom. Finally, the bride came. She looked like a princess in her bridal dress. My other cousins and I escorted her to the stage where she sat facing the guests. The photographers were busy taking her pictures while the another group was doing the cinematography of the event.
After some time, the bridegroom along with his family and guests arrived. We held up the gate for them. The groom was a very handsome man. After a little friendly haggling, he gave us twenty thousand taka as entrance fee. We let him in and received the guests. This is a tradition of Bangladeshi weddings.
The couple looked very beautiful and everyone got busy in taking pictures with them in turns. Meanwhile, dinner was served and some of the guests went to eat. My cousins and I were in charge of the guests. We roamed the whole place making sure every guest is comfortable.
The marriage ceremony was held after the exchanging of rings between the bride and groom. Many senior members of both parties were present at the time when the bride and the groom exchanged garlands and sacredly accepted each other as the partner of life.
The most heart aching part was the farewell. My cousin was crying her heart out. She was hugging all of us in turns. I was fighting back my tears but the moment she hugged me, I could not hold it anymore. Finally, she got into the car, which was decorated with flowers and set off to her in-laws house. With that the ceremony ended.
