Autism

Introduction:
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life.   Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls and knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries.
Causes:
A single specific cause of autism is not known. Current research links autism to biological or neurological differences in the brain.  In many families there appears to be a pattern of autism or related disabilities. Therefore, genetic disorder can be a reason for autism.  It has been proven that autism is not a mental illness, it is not unruly kids who choose not to behave, nor is it caused by bad parenting or by psychological developments.
Diagnosis:
Ideally, a child would be evaluated by a team of professionals. This includes a neurologist, psychologist, pediatrician, speech and language therapist and a learning consultant.
Treatment and therapies:
Some therapies used in the treatment of autism may include applied behavior analysis, dietary or vitamin intervention, educational programs, occupational /physical therapy, speech/language therapy etc.
The most effective treatment is a structured educational program geared to an individual’s developmental level. Because of the wide variety of the disability, there is no particular treatment which is equally effective for everyone with autism.
In the medical sense, there is no cure for the differences in the brain which result in autism.  However, better understanding of the disorder has led to the development of better coping mechanisms.  Some of these symptoms may lessen as the child ages, others may disappear altogether.  The majority of children and adults will, however, continue to exhibit some manifestations of autism to some degree throughout their entire lives.

Autistic people are also a part of our community and most of the times they have special abilities in one field or the other. In that case, we can train them in their field of interest and give them an opportunity to prove themselves to the world.
Conclusion:Children with autism will grow and can learn, even if it might be at a different development rate than other children. Developing an appropriate community-base education and treatment program for an individual with autism is an important step. This will ensure that the child will reach his or her potential.  These people need our appreciation, support and above all, our recognition of them as an equally important part of the society as we are.
